FeesMustFall

#FeesMustFall

#FeesMustFall is a student protest that started in October 2015 when South African Universities decided to make an increase in fees. The first protest was started at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg before it started trending and spreading across the country. (#FeesMustFall)

This hash tag #FeesMustFall has influenced students to join the movement and it has also made it easy for the practice of corporate social media because this hash tag has proved to us that social media has power in a way that it communicated with students, government, youth, by trending and being the voice of students.
FeesMustFall has also made it difficult for the practice of corporate social media since people started mis-using hash tags for their own personal satisfaction and the hash tag ended up leading to other negative hash tags.

How Brands Reacted
Brands reacted fast to the #FeesMustFall campaign since brands were interested to the student’s responses on the increase of fees and brands also engaged with the campaign by broadcasting the movement and also causing the hash tag to trend
FeesMustFall Protest

Advantages of the Campaign
This fees must fall campaign has made even more individuals who cannot afford to pay fees to be funded. The campaign has also gained more international support since students from other countries have supported the movement by posting their photographs of #FeesMustFall

Disadvantages of the Campaign
People now take advantage of modem communication by creating useless hash tags. Looking at the low monthly salaries of lectures, University staff members, this will affect them and if students demand free education the high unemployment rates will increase

Recommendations
In future I personally think that the government should respond back on social media with transparency and be accountable for what they say on social media.

  1. The campaign really helped the students because the fees didn't increase, which means the tag #feesmustfall really worked .

  2. Social media is used for diffrent reasons; it is used for advertising, news, awareness and jokes. Therefore, I do not believe that there is such a thing as useless hash tags.

  3. Fees haven't fallen they are still the same! The government needs to subsidize the Varsities so our parents pay less 😑

    1. Exactly Education is NOT free, if someone else is paying for your education.

  4. As students we need to stick together as one. If we managed to stop the government from increasing the universities tuition fees, imagine the possibilities we are capable of. #PowerToTheStudents

  5. Dope staff. It sad that everything in this country has to be resolved through protest though. Think about it.

  6. I personally think it is unfair that the tertiary institutions have a percentage increase on student fees every year. I support the #FeesMustFall movement and think that the students should have gone as far as protesting against a percentage decrease on the current fees instead of settling for annual interest increment
